Something that really annoys me is how poorly languages are taught in British schools. The increasingly excellent linguistic skills of our neighbours on the continent demonstrate that it doesn't have to be this way. It leads to people thinking they're 'not good at languages,' when in reality they just never found the right methods, don't have sufficient motivation or never seriously tried consuming content.

In the last five years, I've developed conversational levels in Welsh, Russian and Ukrainian. I did start learning Welsh through formal classes, but entirely believe that studying from home can be more effective with some discipline. A good routine is to start by memorising the kind of basic vocabulary you get in travel phrasebooks, learning basic grammar rules (without stressing too much about this), downloading a premade Anki deck which you use every day and consuming content in your target language on a regular basis. Podcasts and vlogs are very ideal for this, but I've used everything from TV shows to anime dubs. Once you've reached a level where you can have basic conversations, start writing down words you don't understand when watching/listening to content in your target language. Following a textbook is also very worthwhile, but can feel more tedious.

On this page I will link some resources that I've used to help me in my endeavours.
